Chapter 6
The next day, Sho went to the canteen as per usual, only to see that Aiba was sitting at their usual place. For some reason, Nino was not there.
"Aiba-kun!" Sho called as he hurried over, "have you seen Nino?"
"Nino-kun? He told me he went to find Oh-chan to go looking around for art supplies and that I'm to have lunch with you," Aiba said with a smile, "you can always call him if it's urgent."
"Ah, no. I was just.. wondering," Sho said as he looked over at the empty seat where Nino would usually sit, "would you like to eat on the roof? It's quieter there."
"The roof? Sounds great! Let's go!" Aiba said as he followed Sho, who only walked forward with the bento hanging limply by his side. His heart beat wildly in his chest, half-anxious about his impending confession and half-wistful that Nino could not be there to wish him luck before it happened.
The overcast sky hung above them as Sho sat with Aiba on the roof. He nervously took out the bento boxes and handed one to Aiba, who looked at it in surprise.
"Oh, you made these? Were they for Nino? You were planning on having lunch with him, weren't you?"
"N-no, I..." Sho mentally kicked himself for fumbling over his words, "I just.. thought that making a boxed lunch every now and then would be nice, so I made some extras for you."
"Ohhh~ this really looks good!" Aiba said happily as he picked at his bento,"but what is the occasion?"
Sho picked up a piece of karaage and ate it. He bit on his lip as he looked up at Aiba, his heart now in his mouth.
"Actually..." Sho trailed off as he chewed thoughtfully at the food. Something was off. It didn't taste as well as he had hoped it would.
"Mmm! Wow, Sho-kun, I didn't know you can cook!"
Sho glanced at Aiba to see that he was wolfing down on his food.
"It's really good!" Aiba praised as he chewed on some karaage, "Ahhh I'm really impressed!"
"Y-you are?" Sho murmured as he ate another piece of karaage.
Something was missing. He knew it- but he just couldn't pinpoint what that is.
"Ah~ Nino is lucky~ to think that you were making this for him."
Sho looked up at him in surprise. "EH?!"
"You were making this bento with him in mind, weren't you?" Aiba said, "you know, cooking is an interesting art- different people could cook the same things but it would wind up tasting differently. But I guess that's what makes a meal prepared by hand so personal, huh!"
Sho felt as if Aiba's words struck a chord in his heart.
That was it. That was what was different.
He made the bento for Aiba, not Nino.
"Good job, grasshopper," Nino praised as he mixed two eggs in a small bowl and started to heat up a pan, "can you do the others too?"
"Are you okay?!" Nino asked worriedly as he turned off the fire and took Sho's hand into his own, bringing his index finger to his lips.
"Shut up, baka," Nino barked as he gave Sho's index finger a gentle squeeze to keep the plaster secure before looking up at him with concern, "does it still hurt?"
"Aiba-kun," Sho said as he looked up at him, his heart now thumping hard in his chest, "actually.. I think I.."
"URGH. YOU BAKA! Why did you not tell me?! And you just walked in here blindly like an idiot!" Nino barked gruffly.
"I will stay and take care of Sho-kun. You guys can go ahead and have fun."
Aiba waited patiently as he watched Sho put down his chopsticks.
"Actually, ever since I first saw you back in our high school, I..."
"Nino, I..I... I..I guess I just wanted to tell you.. I’m in love with you."
Sho exhaled.
"..I thought you were an amazing person for being able to juggle so many things at once and still have that positive smile on your face."
Aiba blinked in surprise and laughed bashfully in response.
"Yeah, I guess I get that a lot, huh!" Aiba said as he ate, "well things do get difficult every now and then. But you know, I really believe that whenever you feel like you are at your limit, it's just a start! That mentality has kept me going on thr.."
But by then, Aiba's words seemed distant from his ears as Sho felt his pulse rate slow.
He felt his heart sink at the weight of his feelings, and the overcast skies above were doing nothing to help him feel better.
He couldn't say it. He just couldn't.
Not when it was Nino he could only ever think about.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Sho walked slowly in the rain, the sounds of the rain pattering on his red umbrella crowding out his surroundings.
He could not believe it.
He hadn't expected himself to go against what he and Nino had worked so hard for by acting on his own feelings.
His own selfish feelings that would definitely trouble Nino if he knew.
Sho sighed as he let his feet walk him towards the usual spot under the grand stands, his shoes squelching loudly in the muddy puddles. When his eyes caught sight of a familiar form lying down under the grand stands, he stopped.
Part of him wanted to run off and not see Nino again.
The other part of him forced his feet into purposeful strides that took him to where Nino was- lying down on the concrete floor while resting his head on the newspaper cushion he made.
He quietly set down his umbrella and sat down beside Nino.
"Nino? Are you sleeping?" Sho asked cautiously.
There was no answer.
He heaved a sigh of relief as he stretched his legs and relaxed himself, his hands splayed out on the concrete by his hips as he let his arms support his body.
"My mission failed today," Sho said to no one in particular, "I couldn't confess to Aiba-kun. But…it's not because I was nervous or anything, really."
He swallowed the lump in his throat.
"I just couldn't do it, Nino. I couldn't tell him that I like him when I really like someone else," Sho continued in a quiet whisper, "I would tell you who it is but... I currently have the feeling that you won't believe me."
He then gave a derisive snort at his own words.
"Boy, how WOULD you react when you realise that the guy I like is you and not Aiba?" Sho said with a slight chuckle of amusement, "I didn't expect myself to act so selfishly either. But…Nino…I really do. I.. I really didn't think that my pseudo-confession at that point in time would take a turn, but when it did.. I.."
Sho sighed as he looked at Nino, who remained asleep beside him.
"I know you like Satoshi-kun. I know that you want to be with him, and that's okay. Really," Sho said, "it's my fault for acting on my own feelings. So now…the very least I can do for both of us is to make sure you get together with Satoshi-kun. So don't worry about me, alright?"
Sho exhaled into the cold, damp air, finally feeling the weight of his feelings slide off his shoulders. He thanked his lucky stars that Nino was sleeping.
Suddenly, he felt a contrasting warmth on his right hand against the cold concrete. Sho glanced down to see that Nino had flipped over in his position, his right hand now resting over his own. He smiled before slowly lifting Nino's right hand and laying it down on the concrete floor. He then stood up and went to pick up his umbrella before trudging out once more in the rain.
Behind him, Nino quietly opened his eyes as he sat up, watching Sho's lone form walking away from him in the rain.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Again?" Nino asked one day has he sat down with Ohno in his room, "just how busy is Sho-kun these days?"
"Well, I guess being the President of the Student Council is often pretty stressful. He has even been coming back to our room really late," Ohno said, "you looking for him? I think an email might work."
"No, I tried that. He hasn't been replying, and it's been days."
Ohno only gave a shrug as he walked over to his fishing rods that leaned against the wall beside Sho's bookshelf.
"Going somewhere?" Nino asked.
"Yeah. Going fishing tomorrow. Sho had suggested that I bring you along for a change of scenery," Ohno said with a smile.
Nino gave an amused sigh.
"I think I forgot to tell him one important thing," he answered, "I get seasick pretty easily."
"Oh, well that is a pity," Ohno said wistfully, "some of the places I have sailed to have a really beautiful waters that were perfect for sketching."
"Really…”Nino mumbled as he looked out of the window of the dorm room.
“Why… why won’t you talk to me?” Nino’s whisper came out as a silent breath that no one could hear.
