Chapter 8
"Wow, you come here often?"
Ohno nodded as he guided Nino into a huge bookstore.
"This place stocks up on a lot of things apart from just novels and self-help books. Do you know you can find books in foreign languages here as well?"
"Ehh~ Wow, the variety in this bookstore really is something!"
"Yeah. If I'm not wrong, the manga section is just right over there," Ohno said, pointing over at manga shelves that stood some distance away,"and the game guides are all on the other side of the store."
Nino eagerly trekked over with Ohno to the manga section where he could recognise some titles that Jun had recommended him.
"You don't mind if we spend some time here, do you? I kind of want to shuffle over to the game guide section later."
"Oh, no problem at all. I will be busy with my fishing magazines and art books anyway."
Nino beamed in response as he looked around.
"I wonder if Sho-kun has seen this place," he said, "this seems like a place that he would stay for in the whole day if he could."
Nino stopped himself. Since when did Sho start to slip into the conversation?
"Well, Sho-kun frequents this place for his textbook and supplementary readings. He often camps in that self-help section over there," Ohno answered. Nino could only respond with a nervous laugh as he tried to look busy at the manga series in front of him.
Time passed by peacefully as Nino watched Ohno head towards the fishing magazines. He placed back the manga book he was holding and watched Ohno quietly from the distance.
From several months of 'study' and spending time together, Nino knew that Ohno Satoshi was exactly as he had expected him to be - calm, easygoing and respectful of Nino's own space. Even now, when they were not really talking, the silence that fell between them was something that was comfortable. He liked having space and time to himself and his interests, and it seemed that Ohno was someone exactly like that.
He knew that if he and Ohno were to go out, they could make a very amiable couple.
So why Nino felt so complicated at that notion, he had no idea.
He leaned back against one of the shelves and looked away, his heart feeling inexplicably heavy.

"Would you like to order?"
Ohno looked up from the menu and nodded.
"I will have the grilled fish lunch set and... Nino? Do you want the hamburger steak lunch set?"
Nino smiled, pleasantly surprised that Ohno knew what was on his mind.
"Yeah, I was just about to order that."
Ohno nodded and looked at the waiter.
"Yeah, he will have that. That will be all."
"Certainly, sir," the waiter said and gave a bow before walking off.
Nino took a sip of water and set the glass down on the table. He looked down at the letter in his hand. Everything that had happened up till now had all started when he first wrote this letter and dropped it by accident. Presently, the letter sat in his hand, opened but still as crisp and smooth as when he first wrote it. He looked at Ohno, who was looking at his new purchases with a satisfied look on his face. Outside, he could hear the soft summer rain pattering on the windows.
It was like Sho had said on that rainy afternoon.
That was most probably the perfect moment for his confession.
And yet somehow, something was amiss.
He remembered how nervous and flustered he was several months ago at the mere thought of giving the letter to him. That gripping mix of anticipation and anxiety had boiled over when he first came face-to-face with Sho, who so happened to be the friend of the guy he had a crush on. He also remembered that static energy in the air when he felt Sho move close to him as he demonstrated how he should confess to Ohno.
So where did all of that go?
"Nino-kun? Is everything okay?"
Nino snapped his head up to see Ohno looking worriedly at him. He shook his head dismissively.
He had been distracted for far too long.
“Yeah, there’s nothing wrong, don’t worry,”Nino said with a smile, “how are lessons so far?”
“Eh, it can be tedious at times, but I have no complaints,”Ohno answered,”I mean, drawing is something I like to do after all.”
“That explains why I see you with your art materials everywhere, huh?” Nino said, “speaking of which, I never really got the chance to thank you for showing me to my dorm the first time I came.”
“Please, don’t mention it. I know our campus is big. I got lost on the first day I came as well.”
“You did?!”
“It was a very long day before I FINALLY got to my dorm room. Apparently Sho-kun was able to navigate his way there when he moved in the day before me. It was because he printed a map of the campus grounds and plotted his way before actually coming down with his stuff.”
Nino laughed. “That sounds just about right. Sho-kun is always careful about a lot of things.”
“Well, a lot of things except his belongings and his cooking...”
“Exactly!”
Nino laughed heartily along with him, his eyes falling once more on the letter in his lap.
“Even after I tried to make a conversation topic focus on him…”Nino thought to himself as he decided to try again, “so you draw. Can I see?”
Ohno gave a slightly bashful look.
“Are you sure you want to see my sketches? I sketch anything and everything whenever I feel like it you know?”
“So what? Isn’t that precisely the charming point of candid sketches?”
“Yeah it’s true. But er… you might find yourself in there as well.”
Nino’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You drew me?”
“Well, not just you, really. You’ll see,”Ohno said as he took out his sketchbook and handed it over to Nino. Nino looked at the sketchbook.
“Ohno Satoshi” was printed in neat characters at the bottom right corner of the cover. He flipped the cover over.
Just as Ohno had said, he probably sketched anything and everything that struck him- street landscapes, still-life drawings of simple objects, animals, flowers…he smiled at a sketch Ohno had made of an old woman sitting with her husband while holding his hand.
"You are really, really good. How did you manage to get the old couple? Did you tell them that you wanted to draw them?"
"Yeah, and they seemed to like the idea as well. They decided to let me do it since they were taking a short break from their evening walk anyway."
"These are beautiful," Nino said in awe as he flipped over to the next page and burst out laughing.
"You drew Aiba-kun eating his curry rice?!"
Ohno chuckled. "It was a very amusing moment. I guess that means you will see yourself soon as well."
Nino nodded as he admired the various candid sketches Ohno had made: Jun's sleeping profile as he slept on the bus back from their theme park outing, a simple sketch of Sho and Aiba talking with each other, Sho's profile when he leans over a desk while studying, a portrait of Nino concentrating on his 3DS game, Sho and Nino laughing together...
"Do you just.. you know, sort of memorise our expressions to get these done?"
"For you and Sho-kun, it was pretty easy to get your smiles down,"Ohno said,"Sho-kun's is easy because he is my roommate. For you though.."
Nino looked up at him curiously as Ohno continued.
"It's because I see you smiling very often."
Nino closed the sketchbook as a smile crept up on his lips.
"I do?"
"Especially around Sho-kun."
Nino stopped short and looked back at Ohno. "What do you mean?"
"You smile a lot around Sho-kun. That kind of makes it easier to capture both your expressions really quickly,"Ohno said, "you two really are close, aren't you?"
"N..no, that isn't.."
"Actually.."Ohno confessed as he fingered his glass of water...

"Oh, and another thing,"Sho said, "could you ask Nino out to go shopping?"
Ohno laughed. "That is one very weird request, but alright. I was planning on getting some fishing magazines at that huge bookstore tomorrow. What does he like?"
Sho smiled sadly to himself as he gave his answer.
"Nino is a gamer and a fan of manga. So, you should probably give him some time to wander around those shelves," he said, "I don't believe he has been there before, so you might have to show him where each section is."
"Ah, I see."
"If you get hungry, you should take him to our usual eatery that is just near to the bookstore. If I remember correctly, it does sell hamburger steak. Nino likes hamburger."
"He does?"
"Yup. Eh.. I think that should be about it. Just remember what he likes and bring him around. That will kepe him amused."
"Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Ohno asked,"you can do all that you know. You know him better."
Sho shook his head.
"I have something on tomorrow. Much as I'd love to join you guys, I can't."
/// Flashback end ///
The sketchbook felt heavy in his hands as Nino absorbed everything that Ohno had said.
"So... Sho-kun was the one who told you everything I liked?"
Ohno nodded. Nino felt his heart thump faster in his chest as he looked down at the letter that still sat in his lap.
"Excuse me, your meal has arrived."
Ohno and Nino looked up to see the waiter set their meals before them.
Nino handed back the sketchbook and picked up his knife and fork.
He stared at the hamburger steak in deliberation, and finally.. he put them down.
He took out some money to pay for his meal and slapped it on the table.
"Sorry, Ohno-kun. I just remembered something," Nino said, "pay for my share with this, yeah?"
"Huh? Nino-kun?! Hey!"
Nino then grabbed the letter in his lap and dashed out of the eatery. He stood under the shop awning for a moment.
The rain had gotten a bit heavier, but that was the least of his worries at the moment. He looked at the letter, now slightly crumpled in his hands, and threw it into a dustbin nearby. He then took a deep breath and ran back towards the university.
